Chef Michael King is a seasoned culinary talent with over 11 years of experience and a deep- rooted passion for fresh ingredients, thoughtful technique, and innovative yet approachable cuisine. As the Area Executive Chef at Arlo Hotels, he leads the culinary vision for both Sungold at Arlo Williamsburg and NoMad Diner at Arlo NoMad, where his menus reflect a commitment to seasonality, community, and flavor.
At Sungold, Chef King collaborates closely with Hudson Valley farms and sources from the Union Square Greenmarket to craft a menu that is vibrant, shareable, and grounded in locality. His goal is to create an experience where guests feel a sense of celebration and togetherness around the table. Many of Sungold’s standout elements also appear at NoMad Diner, where dishes like Eggs Benedict, featuring latkes in place of English muffins, offer a creative spin on brunch classics. His House Mozz Sticks also get a gourmet upgrade, using the same cheese featured in Sungold’s pizzas.
Born and raised in Watertown, Massachusetts, King grew up immersed in the culinary world, working alongside his father in the family-run clam shack from the age of 14. His love of cooking developed in tandem with a passion for theater, which he pursued through playwriting studies at Hampshire College. Cooking, like theater, offered the same rush of creativity and energy— something he continues to chase in the kitchen today. After arriving in New York City in 2013, King held leadership roles at acclaimed spots including Hendriks, Vai (a Michelin-recommended restaurant), the Royalton Hotel, and Irvington and Taco
Electrico at the W Union Square, where he first fell in love with the Union Square Greenmarket.
His culinary background spans a wide range of global influences, including Japanese, Mediterranean, American, and Mexican cuisines. Outside the kitchen, King enjoys spending time with his wife and children, running, photography, and thanks to his unique memory, can correctly guess most acronyms and recite the NYC subway map by heart.
